Short answer
The standard Instagram post size is 1080×1350 px (4:5). Instagram also accepts 1080×1440 (3:4), 1080×1080 (1:1) and 1080×566 (1.91:1). TikTok, Reels, Stories and YouTube Shorts use 1080×1920 (9:16); keep text out of roughly the top 290 px and bottom 670 px.
The standard Instagram post size is 1080×1350 px (4:5). Instagram accepts feed photos from 1.91:1 landscape to 3:4 portrait, so 1080×1440 is the tallest post you can make. TikTok, Reels, Stories and YouTube Shorts all use 1080×1920 px (9:16).
We checked every number on this page against the platform’s own help or ads pages, as of October 2026. Where a platform publishes nothing, we say so and name the source we used instead.
Instagram post size and dimensions
Instagram stores feed photos at up to 1080 px wide. A photo between 320 and 1080 px wide keeps its resolution if its ratio sits between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Wider files are scaled down to 1080 px, and anything outside that ratio range is cropped.
| Format | Size (px) | Aspect ratio | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Default for feed posts and carousels |
| Tall portrait | 1080 × 1440 | 3:4 | Most screen space; matches the grid |
| Square | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | Quotes, product shots |
| Landscape | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 | Wide photos (shows small) |
| Carousel | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 | Up to 20 slides, one orientation |
| Stories | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Full-screen Stories |
| Reels and Reels cover | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | Vertical video and its cover |
| Profile grid tile | 1080 × 1440 (shown) | 3:4 | How every post looks on your profile |
Instagram portrait size: 4:5 or 3:4?
Both work. 3:4 (1080×1440) fills more of the screen and matches the profile grid tile, so nothing gets trimmed on your profile. 4:5 (1080×1350) is the safer pick if you might run the post as an ad, because Meta’s Instagram feed ad spec still tops out at 4:5.
A 4:5 post loses about 34 px from each side in the 3:4 grid. Keep text a little away from the left and right edges.
Instagram aspect ratio for carousels
A carousel holds up to 20 photos or videos. The orientation you pick (square, portrait or landscape) applies to every slide, so export all slides at the same size. A 9:16 slide in a 4:5 carousel gets cropped to 4:5.
The Instagram carousel size guide covers panoramas that span several slides and other multi-slide layouts. For ready-made slide structures, see the Instagram carousel templates.
Stories, Reels and the profile grid
Stories and Reels are 1080×1920. Meta’s ads guide now recommends 1440×2560 for ads, which is the same 9:16 shape, so a 1080×1920 file works.
Since early 2025, the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 tiles cropped from the center. A Reels cover uploaded at 1080×1920 loses 240 px at the top and bottom on your grid, so put the cover title in the middle 1080×1440. Instagram’s help center doesn’t list the grid size; that figure comes from Hopper HQ’s September 2026 guide.
TikTok aspect ratio and video size
The TikTok aspect ratio is 9:16 and the standard TikTok video size is 1080×1920 px. TikTok’s ad specs ask for at least 540×960. They also accept 1:1 and 16:9, but those leave empty space on a phone screen.
Photo mode (slideshows) takes up to 35 photos per post. TikTok doesn’t publish a photo size; 1080×1920 fills the screen, and you can crop other ratios in the editor. The TikTok slideshow guide covers the rest of the workflow.
A TikTok profile photo must be at least 20×20 px. It displays as a circle, so upload a square of 200×200 or larger with the face or logo centered.
Safe zones for 9:16 posts
On TikTok, Reels, Stories and Shorts, the app draws your username, caption, buttons and progress bar over the image. The safe zone is the area those overlays leave alone. Here are the official numbers, converted to pixels on a 1080×1920 frame.
| Platform | Top | Bottom | Left | Right | Based on |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok (video and photo mode) | 240 | 660 | 120 | 120, plus button rail | TikTok in-feed safe zone template |
| Instagram Reels and Stories | 269 | 672 | 65 | 65 | Meta: 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% sides |
| Facebook Reels and Stories | 269 | 672 | 65 | 65 | Meta: same margins |
| YouTube Shorts | 288 | 672 | 48 | 192 | Google vertical video ad template |
TikTok draws its template at 720×1280, so we scaled it by 1.5. The template also blocks a 180 px column for the like, comment and share buttons: x 780–960, from y 840 to the bottom.
One safe area for every app
If you post the same 1080×1920 file everywhere, keep text inside x 120–888 and y 288–1248. That 768×960 box clears every platform’s top and bottom overlays. Also leave the strip right of x 780 empty below y 840, where TikTok’s buttons sit.
All three sets of numbers come from ad templates, and ads carry an extra call-to-action button. Organic posts cover a little less, so these margins err on the safe side.
Facebook, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, Pinterest and X sizes
| Platform | Format | Size (px) | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed post | 1440 × 1800 (1080 × 1350 also fine) | 4:5 | |
| Stories and Reels | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | |
| YouTube | Shorts | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 (square allowed) |
| Image post | 1200 × 1200, 720 × 900 or 1200 × 628 | 1:1, 4:5 or 1.91:1 | |
| Document (carousel) post | 1080 × 1080 per page | 1:1 | |
| Standard pin | 1000 × 1500 | 2:3 | |
| Video pin | 1000 × 1500 | 2:3 (1:1, 4:5, 9:16 also fine) | |
| X | In-feed image | 1080 × 1080, 1440 × 1800 or 1920 × 1080 | 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 |
YouTube Shorts must be square or vertical, up to 3 minutes long and at most 1080p. LinkedIn document posts take a PDF, PowerPoint or Word file up to 100 MB and 300 pages. LinkedIn sets no page size for them, so pick one size and use it on every page.
What happens when you upload the wrong ratio
Each app handles a mismatch its own way:
- Instagram feed: a photo outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 is cropped to fit. A 9:16 slide becomes 3:4 and loses 240 px at the top and bottom.
- Instagram carousel: the orientation you pick applies to every slide, so mixed sizes get cropped.
- TikTok: a square or 4:5 photo shows smaller, with empty space around it, unless you crop it in the editor.
- YouTube: a horizontal video uploads as a regular video, not a Short.
- LinkedIn: vertical images taller than 4:5 get borders on the sides.
- Pinterest: pins taller than 2:3 may get cut off in the feed.
Text is what usually breaks. A crop that removes some sky is fine; a crop that slices a headline is not. Drop your image into the previewer above to check every crop before you post.
Export tips
- Design at the final size. Start your canvas at 1080×1350 or 1080×1920 instead of resizing at the end.
- Export 1080 px wide for Instagram. Instagram scales wider files down to 1080 px anyway.
- Use PNG for text-heavy slides, JPG for photos. PNG keeps letter edges crisp; JPG keeps photo files small.
- Keep one size per carousel. Export every slide from the same template.
- Read it at phone size. Zoom out until the slide is about as big as it will be on a phone, then read every line.
- Respect the safe zone on every slide. Captions and buttons cover every slide, not just the first one.
TokCloner rebuilds slideshows as 1080×1920 (9:16) PNGs, which fill TikTok, Reels and Stories. If you also post those slides in an Instagram feed carousel, keep the text in the middle 1080×1350, which survives both the 4:5 and the 3:4 crop. The TikTok slideshow maker page explains how it works.

What is the Instagram aspect ratio for portrait photos?
Instagram accepts portrait photos up to 3:4 (1080×1440). 4:5 (1080×1350) is the common default and the tallest ratio Meta allows for Instagram feed ads.
What is the TikTok aspect ratio?
9:16 vertical, at 1080×1920 px. TikTok also accepts 1:1 and 16:9 video, but those formats leave empty space on a phone screen.
What size is a TikTok video?
1080×1920 px. TikTok's ad specs set a minimum of 540×960 for vertical video, but 1080×1920 is the standard export for both videos and photo slideshows.
What is the TikTok safe zone?
On a 1080×1920 frame, TikTok's official template keeps 240 px clear at the top, 660 px at the bottom and 120 px on each side. The like, comment and share buttons also cover x 780–960 from y 840 down.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Instagram crops any photo outside the 1.91:1 to 3:4 range, and a carousel applies one orientation to every slide. The profile grid also shows each post as a 3:4 tile cropped from the center.
Is my image uploaded when I use the previewer?
No. The preview runs in your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
